Hemophilia is a rare disorder in which your blood doesn’t clot normally because it lacks sufficient blood-clotting proteins (clotting factors).

If you have hemophilia, you may bleed for a longer time after an injury than you would if your blood clotted normally. Our pharmacy provides medication and nursing services to assist you to care for your unique health needs for this disorder.

Bleeding disorders are characterized as an imbalance of platelets or clotting factors which result in the inability to form proper clots.  Clot too much and it could result in heart attack or stroke, too little, results in excessive bleeding.  A blood clot forms when platelets, stick together bonding to the sight of injury.  Once this happens, proteins in the blood called clotting factors bond with the platelets forming a fibrin mesh, or glue if you will, holding the platelets against the injury allowing it to heal.  Sometimes the bleeding is spontaneous, without a known or identifiable cause, or a result after injury, surgery, trauma, or menstruation.

Treatment for bleeding disorders varies, depending on the condition and its severity.  Examples of bleeding disorders are Hemophilia, von Willebrand Disease and a long list of platelet disorders.  For some bleeding disorders, there are clotting factor concentrates that can be infused prophylactically or on-demand at home.  For other bleeding disorders, there are topical products, nasal sprays, and fresh frozen plasma. If you think you might have a bleeding disorder, you’ll want to consult an expert.  Hematologists are experts in bleeding disorders.  A hematologist can diagnose your disorder, provide guidance for managing it, and prescribe the treatments and therapies to ensure your best possible outcome.  In conjunction with a Hematologist, having a specialized, accredited pharmacy that provides the latest products, home services, and experience in patient care can be a valuable resource.
